A Definition of Digital Humanities

Digital Humanities:

    • a grouping of methodologies and disciplines that explore the intersection of technology and humanities

Digital Humanities is an ever-expanding collection of methods, approaches, and focuses etc to the questions raised within humanities in the context of a digital world. The field has evolved from the simple use of technology in order to produce data to the recreation of a world never seen by someone living  in the 21st century. It was once a means of representing humanities data through mimicry. Despite this, it has become an opportunity for historical preservation, analytical work, and visualizing the past. Digital humanities has evolved rapidly, indebted to technological advancements, in less than 30 years. As technologies continue to advance, there is no doubt that digital humanities will experience its own transformation. The definition above describes the broadness of the “field” perfectly. I hesitate to attach that label to digital humanities because it is so diverse in its content. However, as definitions of DH transformed, one thing still remained true. There is one common goal across most perspectives within humanities. This shared goal has allowed an international online community to flourish. Individuals are connected across disciplines under the common goal to answer the questions the field of humanities has to offer while using technology as the tool, subject, and platform.
