I’ve been reading the biographies of Kwame Ture and Malcolm X as the foundations for my final project. Since I’ve decided to focus on a group of Black thinkers, I thought it might be best to look over the books I already own and see where they lead me. However, working on the fifth module has given my final project more shape. Instead of focusing solely on Black leaders, the film review of Judas and the Black Messiah has prompted me to consider how non-Black thinkers influenced them. I want to use ArcGIS to demonstrate how the ideas of Mao Zedong, Malcolm X, and Karl Marx (in addition to other leaders I am still researching) traveled to later influence Fred Hampton. I know it will be challenging to learn these different concepts, but I am relying on my familiarity with Karl Marx and Malcolm X to make the learning process easier. My next steps are researching Fred Hampton and Mao Zedong.
I am considering this video of Fred’s speeches, from which I’ll use only one or two. I intend to use a clip to start and end the lesson. Students can take notes of what they think are the key elements of Hampton’s speech/his core values. What follows aims to “zoom out” to consider Hampton’s background and the thinkers he credits with shaping his values. I’m still grappling with how I want to display his background and delve into these intellectuals through ArcGIS.
