Over the past few weeks, I’ve had many small wins with the AHS team! Firstly, we were fortunate enough to identify the issue with uploading our podcast content. After reaching out to the team at George Mason University, they increased the upload size! This allowed us to upload WAV files while still considering how we’d handle file sizes and conversions in the future. I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the site management aspect of this internship. Reviewing the recording content and learning how equipment separates audio mixes was an unexpected learning curve!<\/p>\n
Last week, I helped the AHS team host its first Oral History Happy Hour. Held at the Arlington Historical Museum, the event brought together emerging and experienced historians to discuss oral history practices. We reviewed AHS’s current projects and invited participants to develop ideas for future oral history initiatives. I appreciated the opportunity to meet other local historians and learn about their ongoing work. We also discussed the future role of volunteers and how they can help conduct oral histories. I look forward to continuing to assist AHS with its in-person events and collaborating with other members. In the upcoming weeks, I will study the recording equipment to support members conducting oral histories. This will be very helpful for the team, as it allows the interviewer to focus entirely on the narrator, and I will gain a better understanding of the process involved in conducting oral histories.<\/p>\n
As I’ve met with different members of AHS’s board throughout the week, I realized I appreciate a more independent work style. During these meetings, we’ve discussed the site and, more recently, the most effective and ethical transcription program for interviews. However, I’ve been tasked with conducting a small survey on how local historical societies manage their platforms and digital content, as well as independent research on different transcription tools.<\/p>\n
I am most enthusiastic about the opportunity to conduct oral histories with fellow AHS members. I look forward to the upcoming training opportunities! I will also be attending the MARAC virtual conference for the chance to watch their oral history workshop. I have enjoyed working with the AHS, and I greatly appreciate the space they give me to problem-solve.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
