Although the skills I’ve learned throughout the program have been incredibly helpful in this internship, working with the AHS team to bring their vision to life has already been deeply rewarding.

Currently, AHS is focused on bringing their website, Arlington Stories, to life and potentially repurposing their existing digital content. As their intern, I’ve been helping them review their video content and podcast backlog. I worked with Renee Braden to upload some WAV files to the Omeka website. Unfortunately, we couldn’t upload the content that day, so we pivoted to researching how other historical societies upload their content. We discussed archival standards and storage options, including compressing the files to MP3 and keeping the WAV files in a separate storage location.

Regarding content repurposing, AHS board members considered turning their existing content into short-form content to post on their website or YouTube. I used a data scraper to compile their YouTube data for review. Renee and I selected videos to review their visual and audio quality. After reviewing some videos, we decided it would be best to table the content-repurposing task and instead work with one of AHS’s interns to do a thorough review of the channel.

During a meeting with Renee, Peter, and Sean, we decided that my background in genealogical research and interest in oral history would be valuable in conducting oral histories with the descendants of the enslaved. This part of the project excites me especially because I first got started in history while working with William & Mary’s Reparation Committee. Learning to use the audio equipment feels intimidating; however, I am incredibly excited to work with the Black community of Arlington/Alexandria.

My learning goals for this internship are to become reacquainted with Omeka, learn AHS’s audio equipment, and learn how to conduct oral histories myself. I am looking forward to learning more about transcription software, archival standards for audio preservation, and how other local historical societies manage their digital content. Interning with AHS is an unexpected opportunity for me to grow as a digital and oral historian. Arlington Stories meaningfully extends the Arlington Historical Museum’s mission, giving these narrators a platform to tell their stories and making them accessible to the greater Northern Virginia Area.

Working with the Arlington Historical Society board has been a refreshing part of the DPH program.
