My final project is in its final stages as I refine the lesson plan. The topic I’ve chosen explores dominant narratives in history and how the digital age has ushered in a new era of activism through discourse online and the preservation of activists’ voices. This lesson plan is geared towards high school seniors and\/or college freshmen. The purpose of this activity is to inform students how to ask historical questions and navigate films that depict historical moments. Ultimately, the lesson aims to instill in students the understanding that films are not one-to-one replications of real-life events, contrary to what some may believe. Films are the product of many directorial decisions about how to present this history and why. Furthermore, I hope to shed light on how activists’ legacies are preserved through the publication of their <\/em>voices, whether in speeches or essays. With the help of digital tools, this theme of virtual activism has exploded.<\/p>\n

My next steps with my final are creating a detailed outline or mini-syllabus for the classes. I have found most of the content I planned to use; however, I thought it would be interesting to have students view newspaper clippings about the Panthers and the assassination of Fred Hampton to better understand how they were characterized in the news at the time. I’ve encountered many challenges throughout this process, and this module was no exception. As someone who struggles to form my own historical questions, this course has challenged me to constantly refocus and reconsider what I want students to take away from the lesson, how that is reflected in the content I choose, and how I deliver this information.<\/p>\n

Learning about generative AI has helped me reflect on how I’ve been searching for content for my project and how my search queries are being treated. I’ve spoken extensively in prior courses about how my disdain for AI and the environmental consequences has colored the way I interact with the models. However, Dr. Kelly’s approach to using AI for feedback and his emphasis on understanding the model before attempting to mold it to your needs have slightly changed my outlook. While I may consider using AI during these final days to receive feedback, I am still incredibly cautious of being overly reliant on it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
