Currently, as I focus on how to use ArcGIS for this project, I’ve been gathering data and locations in preparation for mapping. However, last week’s class meeting and the module’s contents have forced me to reconsider the path of this project. I’ve decided to focus on a broader question: “How can we compare secondary sources and critique the intentions of authors as history-makers in their own right?” Moving forward, I’ve decided that ArcGIS will be one of three to four activities in the lesson. The other two activities will compare sources tracing the life of Fred Hampton and include questions that address how the authors navigated storytelling.

Reflection:

Exploring last week’s interviews with former students and educational digital history projects has helped me profoundly as I consider my final. Listening to the interviews and discovering that many students encountered the same struggles was truly validating. I’ve learned that I tend to be more ambitious when I start a final project. However, that has hurt me in the past because my point becomes muddied, like one of the interviewees mentioned. To avoid my point being muddied into oblivion, I was forced to reconsider my question and whether the project ultimately makes sense.

Project Update: The concept for my final project is to encourage students to think like historians rather than observers.
