My approach to storytelling has changed dramatically. This course has introduced me to alternative ways of thinking about the story I want to tell, who will interact with the project, and how to improve user experiences. The Ira Glass video and Gimlet Academy both challenged my approach to storytelling, not only for this class’s final project but also in my other coursework. Personally, it can be difficult to stay encouraged about working on a project if it isn’t turning out as I’d planned. However, the Ira Glass video and the podcast reassured me that my first try may not be perfect and emphasized the importance of returning to my “so what?” when I lose focus. I’ve also accepted that my plan can change as I continue to build my project. Whenever I encountered an issue, I struggled to problem-solve because I confined myself to my initial plan. It wasn’t until the later modules that I decided to challenge myself and think outside the box I had put myself in.<\/p>\n
The personas activity was an unexpectedly useful tool. I found that as I got closer to finishing my final project, I returned to the personas and reminded myself who<\/em>\u00a0<\/i>I’m talking to, which was incredibly useful. Viewing other sites as part of the modules was vital in helping me consider how other media could be included in the site. Namely, listening to the walking tours inspired me to consider incorporating my own content, a video essay, and reflect on how I could include podcasts on the site.<\/p>\n As a historian, this course has taught me not to be so rigid in the beginning phases of an assignment. That rigidity can become an obstacle in itself, even though I may think I’m staying true to my initial vision. I also intend to add storyboarding to my project brainstorming process, even for a written assignment. As someone who struggles to outline because I won’t allow myself to write down imperfect or incomplete thoughts, storyboarding has helped me immensely. Funnily enough, I’ve been considering returning to the elementary-school practice of drawing spiderwebs to help with brainstorming. This course has cemented the phrase “rejection is redirection,” and I look forward to tackling my future coursework with this new outlook.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" My approach to storytelling has changed dramatically.
